Princess Anne Expresses 'Shock' After 11 Students Died in Fire at Uganda School for the Blind

Queen Elizabeth's daughter, who is on a four-day visit to Uganda, had planned to visit the school during her visit to the African country

Princess Anne is mourning the loss of children at a school for the blind in Uganda that she was due to visit on Friday.

Eleven pupils died and at least six more were severely injured at the Salama School for the Blind in the early hours of Monday, VOA reported.

Princess Anne, 72, was due to visit the children and staff as part of her four-day visit to the African country and to highlight the work being done there by a charity she supports, Sense International.

The fire is believed to have started in a dormitory for 17 girls on Monday. Police are investigating the cause of the blaze at the school in the central Mukono district.

"I was shocked to hear the news of the tragic loss of life," Anne said in a statement on Thursday. "The work of Sense International across many countries is hugely appreciated, working with such a vulnerable group of children. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and staff."

Tom Brady feels sting of loss as Tampa Bay Buccaneers fall to 3-5

 TAMPA, Fla. –

Still dressed in full uniform, even after several of his teammates had already departed for the night, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady stared dejectedly at the floor of his locker Thursday night at Raymond James Stadium.

With his arms folded and his face flushed, Brady still very much wore the sting of the Bucs' 27-22 loss to the Baltimore Ravens -- their fifth loss in the past six games -- which dropped him to 3-5 as a starter for the first time in his storied 23-year NFL career.

Backup Blaine Gabbert sat next to him, offering words of comfort, while fellow quarterback Ryan Griffin and quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen took turns patting him on the back.

"I know he's really hard on himself," right tackle Tristan Wirfs said across from Brady's locker. "We're all really hard on ourselves. We're gonna do our best to get this thing fixed cuz this ain't a fun feeling right now."

"Nobody's pointing the finger at Tom Brady," wide receiver Mike Evans said. "It's a whole team. A team game. The ultimate team game. It's not just one player. It never has been."

Moments later, Brady took the podium.

"I don't think you can erase what happened the last eight weeks," he said. "We've gotta dig deep, see what we're all about, come to work, try to improve and give ourselves a better chance to win."At 45 and in the last year of his contract with the Buccaneers, this could be his last NFL season, having already retired once for 40 days this offseason. It's a reality his teammates are all very much aware of, making the Bucs' rash of losses in 2022 devastating.

"I hope he plays as long as he can," Wirfs said. "I'd love to play with him forever. I love Tom. I wish everything was going as perfect as possible for him, if it is the last year for him, or whatever. We're just trying to ball, and it's frustrating when stuff's not working and you don't have the answer in front of you."

Evans added, "He's the best to ever do it. I mean, he hates losing. That's all he knows is winning and being 3-5 is not good enough, so we've gotta turn it around and soon."

They've been unable to put points on the board all season. They managed to score on a 1-yard touchdown run on the opening drive -- their first opening-drive TD all year -- and grabbed a 10-3 lead in the first quarter. But they wouldn't find the end zone again until 53 seconds left in regulation, when Brady found Julio Jones on an 8-yard strike. It was the pair's first touchdown of the season, with Jones, who was supposed to play a big role in their offense, missing the past three games with a knee injury.

Defensively, things unraveled in the second half after top outside linebacker Shaq Barrett left the game with an Achilles injury, which sources told ESPN the team fears will end his season. The Bucs surrendered three touchdowns after that, and the offense couldn't keep pace.

"It's definitely tough," linebacker Lavonte David said of losing games with Brady. "Just the things he'd won over his career. The type of guy he is, the type of man he is, the type of football player, the type of leader he is - definitely hard. He's feeling all the same emotions we feel. We definitely gotta try to turn this thing around because we've got the guys to do it. But it's gotta come from somewhere."

The Bucs will have a long weekend to regroup and coach Todd Bowles said the team would mull possible changes.

"We are going to talk about everything this weekend," Bowles said. "When you are not playing well, everything is on the table for us, and we will discuss it as a staff."

Amazon Becomes Latest Tech Stock Casualty: Shares Plunge 20% After Dismal Earnings Reveal 'Giant Red Flag'

Shares of Amazon tanked to levels unseen in more than two years in after-hours trading after the ecommerce juggernaut reported revenue on Thursday that fell short of analyst expectations—making it the latest casualty of an earnings season that has tanked the value of some of technology's biggest players, as fears of an impending recession cut into growth expectations.

The after-hours plunge has pushed Amazon shares to their lowest level in more than two years.

KEY FACTS

Amazon reported revenue of $127.1 billion in the third quarter, slightly less than the $127.5 billion analysts were forecasting, while net income fell to $2.9 billion, or $0.28 per share, down about 9% from one year earlier.

Immediately after the announcement, shares plunged more than 18% to less than $90 in after-hours trading, pushing the stock to its lowest level since early 2020 and down nearly 50% for the year—far worse than the tech-heavy Nasdaq's 32% decline.

In a statement, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy acknowledged the "uncertain economic times" have forced the company to cut costs across its fulfillment network, and also predicted the company will make about $144 billion in sales this quarter; analysts were expecting the company to pull in $155 billion.

Also driving bearishness, the company reported sales of its fast-growing Amazon Web Services segment grew 28% in the quarter—worse than expectations calling for growth of more than 30%.

"AWS is the heart of the company, and the weakness there will raise a giant red flag," analyst Adam Crisafulli of Vital Knowledge Media said in emailed comments, pointing out the segment has been driving the bulk of Amazon's stock gains during the pandemic.

FORBES VALUATION

$134.8 billion. That's how much Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was worth when the market closed on Thursday. At one point worth more than $200 billion, Bezos' fortune has cratered alongside shares of Amazon, which peaked at more than $188 last year but have since fallen 53%.

KEY BACKGROUND

Global economies have started to slow down as central banks including the Federal Reserve work to combat inflation by tempering consumer demand with higher interest rates. Recent earnings reports have started to reflect the pressures—and it's been particularly bad for technology giants. On Tuesday, Alphabet stock plunged after the Google parent missed third-quarter sales and profit expectations. Then on Wednesday, Meta posted similarly disappointing results—pushing the social media firm's shares down nearly 25%.
